Returning From Injury: A Smarter Game Plan

Feeling better is encouraging. Being ready for the full demands of your sport is a different question.

Returning From Injury: A Smarter Game Plan

The return from injury isn’t a single moment when someone declares you “cleared.” It’s a progression from healing, to rebuilding capacity, to practicing your sport, to performing confidently again.

Sports-medicine experts describe return to sport as a continuum that should develop alongside rehabilitation—not as an isolated decision at the end.Consensus statement

Rebuild the foundation

Start by restoring the mobility, strength and control required for everyday movement. The specific benchmarks should reflect your injury and be determined with your care team.

Reintroduce sport demands gradually

Running in a straight line is different from cutting, reacting, jumping, absorbing contact or performing while tired. Progressively reintroduce the movements and intensity your activity actually requires.

Test more than pain

A lack of pain is only one part of readiness. Strength, movement quality, workload tolerance, confidence and your response the following day also matter.

Include the athlete in the decision

A smart return plan brings together the athlete, clinician, trainer and coach when applicable. Share what feels strong, what feels uncertain and what happens after activity.

Don’t rush the final step

Returning to practice, returning to competition and returning to your previous performance level are not necessarily the same milestone.
