Overview

What is compounding?

Specialized pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications to meet an individual patient’s specific needs. For athletes, that can mean a custom topical, an adjusted dosage, or a formulation without an ingredient they can’t take.

SportPharm™ has been compounding for elite athletes, clinics and teams since 1997, making it one of the most experienced names in performance-driven pharmacy.

From prescription to delivery

What’s the process for
specialized compounding?

Three steps, each with a pharmacist check. Nothing is compounded before the clinical and sport review is complete.

Compounded medications require a patient-specific prescription and are not FDA-approved products.

The process

How a prescription becomes a product.

Reviewed, prepared, verified and shipped — typically within three business days of compounding.

  1. 1
Clinical and sport reviewReceive the prescription
    • The pharmacist evaluates clinical appropriateness, dosing, drug interactions, patient allergies and therapeutic goals.
    • Compliance is checked against athlete-specific regulations from governing bodies such as WADA, USADA or the relevant professional league.
    • Any ingredient that may be prohibited, require a Therapeutic Use Exemption, or need anti-doping documentation is flagged.
  2. 2
    Prepared and verifiedCompound the prescription
    • Trained compounders prepare the medication using USP-compliant techniques and ingredients.
    • Labeling includes the beyond-use date, storage conditions and lot numbers.
    • The pharmacist performs a final verification for accuracy, quality, documentation and labeling.
  3. 3
Delivered with instructionsPackage and ship the medication
    • Product is packed according to storage needs — refrigeration, light protection, tamper-evidence.
    • Patient education materials are included.
    • Typically arrives within three business days after compounding.

Sport status can depend on the ingredient, route, dose and governing body.

What our athletes say

Clean sport, without
the guesswork.

One athlete’s account of what a compounded topical changed for them.

★★★★★
As a competitive triathlete, I’m always cautious about what goes into my body — one wrong ingredient could jeopardize years of training. SportPharm took the guesswork out of my recovery. They compounded a custom topical pain cream that helped manage inflammation without triggering any banned substance concerns. The pharmacist even reviewed it against the WADA list and coordinated with my doctor.
