IS THIS NORMAL POST-WORKOUT SORENESS?

Most training soreness is ordinary and passes on its own. Some of it deserves a closer look. Here’s how to tell the difference — and what to do with today and tomorrow.

What it usually feels like

ORDINARY SORENESS HAS A PATTERN.

Delayed-onset muscle soreness typically shows up hours after the work, not during it.

More like expected soreness

  • Sets in 12–48 hours after the session
  • Feels dull, achy and spread across a muscle group
  • Affects both sides fairly evenly after two-sided work
  • Eases with light movement and a warm-up
  • Improves steadily over 2–4 days

Worth pausing to investigate

  • Sharp, stabbing or pinpoint pain you can cover with a finger
  • Pain during the activity that changes your form
  • One side only, with no clear reason
  • Swelling, bruising, instability or giving way
  • Getting worse, or still there after several days
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness
These are patterns, not a diagnosis.

Stop and seek care promptly for significant swelling, inability to bear weight, numbness or weakness, severe or worsening pain, or any symptoms after a head impact.

What to do today

TODAY IS FOR SUPPORTING, NOT TESTING.

1

Keep moving gently

Easy walking or relaxed movement usually feels better than complete stillness. Let comfort set the limit.

2

Cover the basics

Sleep, fluids and food do more for soreness than most recovery gadgets. Start there before adding anything.

3

Don’t re-test it

Repeatedly poking or loading the sore spot to see if it still hurts tends to keep it irritated.

And tomorrow?

NORMAL, MODIFIED, OR RECOVERY DAY?

A

Train normally

Soreness is mild, even, and fades once you’re warmed up. Nothing changes how you move.

B

Modify the session

You’re noticeably sore but moving fine. Reduce load or volume, or train something else.

C

Take a recovery day

Soreness is changing your form, or you’re run down. Rest is the training decision here.
